It was almost time for the evening snack and I had prepped batter for pancakes. It was cozy and warm, and 3-year-old had already chosen a book for bedtime. Then my 8-year-old asked, “Can we please still go fishing?”
I almost said, “No, not anymore at this time of day.” But then I thought — why not? My better half had already returned home for work, but the children and I are on holiday without a schedule. We don’t even have an early wake-up in the morning and batter actually gets better with some rest. So, we went!
It was raining lightly. We wore jackets and took our fishing baits and spinning rods. The kids chose the baits they wanted to use. After we had everything ready, we stepped onto the deck and started to cast.
3-year-old fished with her plastic rod. She had a regular string in it and I tied real bait in it. She is very careful with it so I was not worried. She cant cast with it but she uses it like fishing rod. She kept shouting that she had caught fish — even though she hadn’t. But that’s a the game for her, and that’s exactly how it should be.
I was impressed once again how skilled my 5-year-old is with her own spinning rod: she can do everything by herself (besides attaching the bait). She really casts it far. I hope she gets a fish soon to keep her excitement alive.
It did not take long until 8-year-old screamed he had a catch. Just then he pulled up a perch. He was so excited and proud. It was the first fish we got from the cabin’s shore. After that he didn’t want to fish anymore. He said: “That’s it, now I’m done”. The two youngest kept fishing for a while.
After fishing we came back inside and hung our wet jackets to dry near the fireplace. Kids went to read on the couch and I started to fry the pancakes and we ate them with blueberry soup. Rain continued outside and we had a cozy bedtime story time in the living room with the view of the lake.
